With acupuncture, thin and fine tiny needles will be placed by an acupuncturist in certain points in your body to help improve the flow of qi or energy. In some cases, this helps you overcome depression or even ADHD, because the flow of energy affects the heart (emotions) and other organs of your body.

Benefits of Acupuncture

The major benefits are:

  • Drug-free pain relief
  • Prevention against disease/many common ailments
  • The treatment of the disease's cause as well as its symptoms
  • A holistic approach to illness--linking body, mind and emotions

I spoke with Dr. Bombit Sison and he also conducted a tongue analysis. By looking at your tongue, the physician can tell you how the appearance of your tongue reveals certain things about your health.

For example, if your tongue is redder than the usual light-pink color, or if there are red spots on your tongue, that can be a sign of internal heat. In which case, you will be asked to consider reducing your intake of "hot" foods (i.e., foods which are sticky or spicy).

The appearance of your tongue can also provide clues regarding your heart and lungs. An interview will also help the doctor understand your illness or health complaint, and whether the causes are purely physiological or if there are psychological or emotional issues (i.e., stress, anxiety).

From there, the acupuncturist will have a better idea of where to insert the sterile single-use needles.

(The complete treatment consists of 10 weekly sessions. In cases of severe pain, however, such as a sprain, the sessions may be conducted daily for 3 days.)

The procedure can last anywhere from 20 minutes to 45 minutes, and you can experience a "heavy" or "electric" sensation. For some people, the relaxing soothing helps them drift off to sleep.

There are some risks, though. As with any medical procedure, there are some minor risks involved. These involve slight bruising near the area of insertion, slight bleeding and a very low risk of local skin infection. These risks are practically minimized through the use of sterile one-time use needles and proper techniques by a well-trained practitioner.

Other reported effects may include lightheadedness or nausea, usually caused more by a phobia of being pierced by a needle than of the treatment itself.

Please prepare a rest-period of two hours after the treatment. You will be asked not to over exert yourself physically during that post-two hour period. Also, you will be asked to avoid overeating and to also avoid getting wet (such as from the rain).
