Childhood Dreams

Do you remember what you wanted to be when you grew up? Like practically all children, I think I wanted to be a doctor but never did I dream of going into credit review or analysis (which is what I do for a living now) or even wanting to be a writer (which is really what I enjoy doing now).

My daughter just finished with her kindergarten years, after my husband and I have spent enough money to probably put her through college. I remember, when I was a kid, I just went to nursery and to prep (just two years) and then, on to Grade 1. Now, my daughter had to go to Nursery, Kinder 1, Kinder 2, Kinder 3. After four years of studying (college, I tell you!), she is now on her way, finally, to Grade 1.

The Kinder 3 classes had their culminating activity last Friday and it was interesting to listen to the kids and what they wanted to be when they grow up. Do you know what the popular occupations are these days? Fashion Designer. Veterinarian. Chef. Rock Star!

I only heard one child each say that they wanted to be an astronomer, a scientist, an engineer, and an architect.

Dreams may change from day to day or from year to year. My son, for example, has gone from wanting to be a chef, to a chemical engineer, to a veterinarian.

Oh well... it's interesting to see how they dream, for life without a dream, is well...isn't life... really.
